What Is Fahrenheit–Celsius Mental Conversion?

Definition

Mental shortcuts: °F→°C ≈ (F−30)/2; °C→°F ≈ C×2+30. Anchors: 32°F=0°C, 72°F≈22°C, 98.6°F=37°C, oven 350/400/450°F = 175/205/230°C.

Formula

°C ≈ (°F−30)/2; °F ≈ °C×2+30

Worked Example

28°F ≈ −1°C (true −2.2°C); oven 425°F ≈ 200°C.

Common Misconception

"Mental shortcuts fully replace the formula" - error grows away from room temperature (1.2C at 0F, 4C at -40F). "Fahrenheit is finer so it is more accurate" - fineness is gradation density; accuracy is scale-independent.
