What Is Temperature Scales?

Definition

Celsius (0/100 at ice/steam), Fahrenheit (32/212), Kelvin (offset Celsius from absolute zero). °F = °C×9/5+32; K = °C+273.15; the scales cross at −40°.

Formula

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32; K = °C + 273.15

Worked Example

86°F is 30°C; oven 350°F is 177°C; −40 is the crossover point of both scales.

Common Misconception

"0F is only slightly colder than 0C" - it is 18 Celsius degrees colder (-17.8C). "Kelvin can be negative" - thermodynamically impossible; absolute zero is the floor. "Temperature converts like length" - scales have offsets; never just multiply.
