What Is Steps per Day?

Definition

Daily steps track all-cause mortality in an L-curve: from 2,700 to 8,000, each extra 1,000 steps cuts risk meaningfully; beyond 8,000 the marginal gain shrinks but persists (older cohorts plateau near 6,000-8,000). Steps are easier to accumulate than gym time: an office worker logs 3,000-4,000 naturally, and one 30-minute brisk walk (~3,500 steps) reaches 7,000. Intensity helps: 4,000 steps above 100 steps/minute outperform the majority of a leisurely 8,000.

Formula

Target: 7,000-8,000 steps/day with ≥3,000 brisk (>100 steps/min)

Worked Example

Get off one stop early (+1,800), a 15-minute loop after lunch (+1,500), a 25-minute brisk walk after dinner (+2,800) — 4,000 baseline + 6,100 clears 10,000 without a gym.

Common Misconception

"Under 10,000 steps is wasted" — most benefit arrives by 8,000, and a 10,000 gate discourages beginners. "More steps wear out knees" — within ~15,000 steps at normal weight, knee osteoarthritis rates fall, not rise (cartilage needs moderate loading); start with swimming or cycling if overweight.
