What Is Resting Heart Rate?

Definition

RHR is counted at rest (best: before getting up). Normal range 60–100 bpm; trained athletes can be 40–50. Sustained RHR above 75–80 correlates with higher all-cause mortality; aerobic training lowers it 5–10 bpm in 8–12 weeks.

Formula

Normal: 60–100 bpm; optimal ~50–70

Worked Example

An RHR of 82 dropped to 71 after 8 weeks of regular easy jogging.

Common Misconception

"90 bpm is within normal range, no worries" - 60-100 is a statistical band; for an individual, 85 carries more long-term risk than 65. Persistent tachycardia calls for checking anemia, thyroid, anxiety and sleep - not ignoring it.
