What Is Commute Cost?
Definition
Full commute cost = explicit (fuel/power, parking, fares, depreciation) + hidden time cost (hours × hourly income value). Driving 25 km one-way: fuel 15 + wear 10 + parking 20 = 45 yuan/day × 22 = 990 yuan/month; time 1.5 h/day × 22 = 33 hours ≈ 4 workdays, worth ~2,800 yuan/month at a 15k salary — hidden cost is nearly 3× explicit. In housing decisions, paying 2,000 more in rent near work beats saving 2,000 by commuting 1.5 hours for most mid-to-high earners.
Formula
Monthly = explicit daily × 22 + hours/day × hourly value × 22
Worked Example
A 40-minute subway ride: fares 6×44 = 264 yuan/month; time 0.67×2×22 ≈ 29 hours ≈ 3.6 workdays ≈ 3,000 yuan at a 10k salary — total 3,264 yuan, 92% of it time.
Common Misconception
"Driving costs more than the subway, so transit always wins" — on explicit costs yes, but the 50 minutes saved per day often outweighs the fare gap. And "remote work saves the commute fee" — what it really saves is time and energy, which is why most people accept lower pay for hybrid arrangements.
