Net Force Calculator: Parallelogram rule · direction angle · special cases. Net Force Calculator uses standard science & engineering formulas to compute accurate results instantly.
How to combine two forces
- 1Parallel rule: place the two forces head-to-tail; the resultant is the diagonal of the parallelogram they form.
- 2Formula: F = √(F1² + F2² + 2·F1·F2·cos θ) = √(3² + 4² + 2·3·4·cos 90°) = 5 N.
- 3Direction: tan φ = F2·sin θ / (F1 + F2·cos θ), measured from F1 — here φ = 53.1°.
- 4Bounds: |F1 − F2| ≤ F ≤ F1 + F2, i.e. 1 N – 7 N for this pair.
- Three or more forces: combine two first, then combine the resultant with the next (or split every force into x/y components and sum).
- Same direction F = F1 + F2 (max); opposite F = |F1 − F2| (min); perpendicular √(F1²+F2²). Equal forces at 120° give a resultant equal to either force.
- If the resultant is 0, the object is in equilibrium (balanced forces) — acceleration is zero per Newton's first law.
- Newton's second law with the resultant: a = F / m — use the net force, not a single force.
