What Is Time Zones & UTC?

Definition

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the atomic-clock-based international reference; each zone is expressed as UTC±hours (some with 30/45-minute offsets). Beijing is UTC+8; New York is UTC-5 standard, UTC-4 daylight. "3 pm meeting" is meaningless without naming whose 3 pm — for bookings, flights and countdowns, convert both moments to UTC, do the math, then render locally. China runs one zone (UTC+8) across five geographic zones, so sunrise in Xinjiang is ~2 hours later than in Beijing.

Formula

Beijing = UTC + 8h; local arrival = departure UTC + flight time + destination offset

Worked Example

Depart Beijing 20:00, fly 12h, arrive New York (UTC-5, winter): departure UTC 12:00, arrival UTC 24:00 (next day 00:00), local New York 19:00 — you arrive the same day you left; the "23-hour trip" illusion is purely time zones.

Common Misconception

Assuming "+8h" always converts Beijing time — DST zones shift between winter and summer. Assuming China has no time-zone issues — one official zone across five geographic ones. Storing "naive local time" without zone in databases is the costliest cross-border design mistake.
