What Is Night Shift & Circadian Rhythm?

Definition

The suprachiasmatic nucleus runs a ~24.2-hour intrinsic clock, advanced each morning by blue light. Night shift's core problem is not one late night but double misalignment: melatonin (rising after 21:00, peaking 3-4 a.m.) floods during work while daytime sleep is crushed by light and noise — long-term night work associates with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk (IARC Group 2A). Practical fixes: rotate forward (day→swing→night beats the reverse), wear sunglasses after night duty to block dawn light, black out the bedroom at 22°C, and hold one stable sleep window (e.g. 8:00-15:00) across consecutive shifts.

Formula

Melatonin peaks ≈ 3-4 a.m.; re-anchoring takes 3-5 days on a fixed window

Worked Example

A nurse on two night shifts a week: instead of a 4-hour fragmented nap, ride home in dark sunglasses, sleep 9:00-16:00 blackout, then 30 minutes of 5000K bright light on waking — roughly twice the recovery.

Common Misconception

"Sleeping till noon on weekends fixes it" — it repays sleep pressure, not circadian phase; Monday social jetlag is exactly that. Melatonin is a phase-shifter (0.5-1 mg to advance sleep), not a sedative — more is not stronger. And caffeine late in a shift wrecks the post-shift sleep window — last cup before mid-shift.
