What Is Metabolic Age?
Definition
Metabolic age is the "equivalent age" obtained by plugging your BMR into population-average formulas — BMR above your age cohort's mean yields a lower metabolic age. All its information comes from BMR, itself estimated from weight, height, age and sex (equations) or bioelectrical impedance (scales), with error above ±10%. Muscle mass is the only variable that genuinely raises BMR: adding 3 kg of muscle burns an extra ~60-90 kcal/day and moves metabolic age immediately.
Formula
Metabolic age: the age whose average BMR ≈ your BMR
Worked Example
At 35 with BMR 1,650 kcal (cohort mean 1,580) metabolic age reads ~29; after +3 kg muscle and −2 kg fat, BMR hits 1,700 and metabolic age "drops" to 26 — the change reflects improved body composition.
Common Misconception
Treating it as a medical marker — it is not a clinical measure; algorithms differ by brand and the same person can read 8 years apart on two scales. "High metabolic age means metabolic disease" — thyroid and glucose issues need lab tests, not a bathroom scale.
