What Is Emergency Fund?
Definition
Emergency fund = monthly essential spend (rent/mortgage + food + commute + insurance + minimum payments) × 3-6, covering job loss, illness and urgent repairs. Three storage rules: instantly accessible (T+0/T+1), principal-safe (deposits/money funds, no equity funds), and segregated from daily spending accounts. Unstable incomes (freelance, commission) need 9-12 months; with stable housing-fund support and family backup, 3 months is acceptable.
Formula
Emergency fund = monthly essentials × 3-6 (× 9-12 for unstable income)
Worked Example
With 8k/month essentials (4k mortgage + 4k living), hold 24-48k in money funds + demand deposits; putting it into an 8% equity fund means selling at a 15% loss in month two of unemployment.
Common Misconception
"Cash loses value, so invest it all" — an emergency fund's priced function is certainty of survival; its hidden yield is not being forced to sell assets at 50 cents on the dollar. But don't hold more than 12 months — the excess is inefficient capital that belongs in growth.
