What Is Credit Score?

Definition

The central credit report tracks cards, loans, guarantees, delinquencies and inquiries (your own checks don't count; too many lender "hard pulls" — say 6+ in two months — signal cash hunger). Top scoring factors: delinquency history (heaviest; "three consecutive or six total" misses usually kill a mortgage), utilization (above 80% on cards hurts), account mix and age, and recent inquiries. Being a "credit blank" with zero history does not help — the model can't score you, so approvals stay conservative.

Formula

Score ≈ f(payment history, utilization, credit age, inquiries, mix)

Worked Example

Three months before a mortgage application: no new cards, no testing online-loan limits (each check hits your report), and pay card utilization from 90% down under 30% — these three steps alone measurably improve approval odds.

Common Misconception

Assuming "never borrowing" means excellent credit — a blank file gives the model nothing to score, so approvals stay small. Better: keep 1-2 small cards and pay on time to build history. And "one late day is fine" is wrong too: most banks offer a 1-3 day grace window, after which it's reported.
