What Is Acre & Hectare?
Definition
The hectare is metric: 10,000 m² = 15 mu, the standard for land and agriculture in China. The acre is imperial: 43,560 ft² ≈ 4,046.86 m², historically "a day's ploughing by one ox." One hectare ≈ 2.471 acres. The mu is 666.67 m² (60 square zhang) from traditional metrology. A football pitch (105×68m) at ~7,140 m² ≈ 0.71 ha ≈ 10.7 mu makes a handy anchor.
Formula
1 ha = 10,000 m² = 15 mu ≈ 2.471 acres; 1 mu = 666.67 m²
Worked Example
A standard pitch is ~7,140 m² ≈ 10.7 mu ≈ 0.71 ha; 100 mu = 6.67 ha ≈ 16.5 acres.
Common Misconception
"A mu is about a tenth of a hectare" — it is one fifteenth (1 ha = 15 mu), a frequent media slip. And acre/hectare are not near-equals: an acre is ~59% of a hectare (1 acre ≈ 0.405 ha).
